There was a good interview on CNBC this morning with Steve Wynn.  He talks about how he believe the current government policies are the wrong ones for an economic recovery because they won’t help the jobs situation.

Blogging, Economy, Trading »

I’ve had many people ask me what blogs do I read?  Well, I read a lot of different blogs and websites, but there are a few that I check out almost every day.  I’m going to detail those blogs here.
Zero Hedge
Zero Hedge is a great website that provides excellent economic news, views on the stock markets and some good political commentary (mostly economic related).  One of my favorite aspects of this blog are the intelligent (and sometimes witty) comments that each article usually has.

Times are tough.  Families are strapped for cash.  In our business, we have many suppliers looking for cash advances to cover some expenses.  Cash is tight all across the board (unless you’re Goldmach Sachs of course).  It’s interesting how when we discuss people who are struggling, how many times the phrase “about to lose their home” comes up.  Each time that phrase is uttered, there is always a moment of silence, like it’s too sad a state of affairs to even comment on such a scenario.
My position that I keep …

In the news this week is word that the government “pay czar” will be requiring certain institutions that accepted tax payer dollars for aid (but not all of them) to cut executive compensation.  While I am one of the many Americans that is outraged by the billions in bonuses being distributed by these companies, I have mixed feelings on this issue.
First, I was listening to Rush Limbaugh today and Republican listeners were calling in upset that people on Wall St. were going to have their compensation “regulated”.  I disagree with …

401(k), Retirement »

When it comes to saving and investing, 401(k) participation is as good as it gets for most 20-somethings.  401(k)s are great vehicles and should definitely be embraced, but the question remains: is participation in these plans all that you should worry about at this point in your life?
Looking At Some Numbers
Let’s assume that an individual is contributing 6% of their salary into their 401(k).  The following numbers would apply:

A salary of $40,000 would result in $2,400 annual contributions ($200 / month)
A salary of $50,000 would result in $3,000 annual contributions …

Investing, Trading »

When it comes to 20-something investors, you need to decide which skills to learn and what path to take as an investor/trader.  I’ve sort of changed my view on this question in recent years due to a number of factors that I’ll explain in this article, but I’ve decided you should focus on learning technical analysis more than fundamental analysis.
Before explaining why, let’s look at exactly what each of these are.
Fundamental Analysis is described as analyzing the internals of a specific company through the financial documents, earnings reports, industry data, …

Capitalism, real capitalism, is under attack in America and around the world.  These articles entitled Campaigning For Capitalism are meant to provide insight and a case for why we should get back to embracing the free markets that made America the greatest economy that the world has ever seen.
For the first article in the series, Campaigning For Capitalism, I’m going to hit on a couple important points that seem to be mis-understood in America.  I hope you enjoy.

While driving to work this morning, I was listening to CNBC through my satellite radio and the constant message was how great the Caterpillar (CAT) earnings beat was.  Analysts expected $.06 profit per share, and Caterpillar announced $.62 profit per share.  What a beat!
When I arrived at work, I logged onto my workstation and pulled up Yahoo! Finance like I typically do.  One of the feature articles was about the Caterpillar earnings report.  What caught me by surprise was that the headline said “Caterpillar 3Q profit drops 53 percent on …
