Republicans Do Support Extension of Unemployment Benefits

20 July 2010 288 views 4 Comments

If you scan the headlines, you’d think that the Republicans hate the jobless and want to block extending the jobless benefits.  Even if you read the articles, an important point is often left until the end (here’s an example).  This point is that the Republicans DO support the extension of the benefits.  The reason they are blocking it is because the Democrats refuse to make cuts elsewhere in order to pay for it.  If the cuts are made, the Republicans would vote for it.  Essentially, they want to extend the benefits, but they don’t want to borrow money to pay for it.   Common sense no?

Well, it doesn’t matter.  It cleared the Senate today, so it will be signed into law soon and no, there will be no cuts made to pay for it.  The result, an increase in the deficit.  Well done guys.

So then you are for going into debt to pay for unemployment benefits simply because they've done other things without paying for them? Not quite the way to right the ship in my opinion.

April: What you've laid out is a very emotional argument. Emotionally, I agree with you. But emotions don't necessarily lead to the right solution. Should we have indefinite unemployment benefits? If not, how long? We're at 2 years right now basically. 5 years? 10?

Look, I've been against all bail outs. And just so we're clear the Democrats were all for bailing out all of the same institutions. The Repubs & Dems are the same in that regard. My belief is that they're all for the same thing – the status quo because the status quo keeps them both in power – yes, we go in cycles in which the Dems sometimes have more power or the Repubs have more power… but overall the same people are in power. To stay in power they need the status quo. They need to bail out banks, they need to bail out people, all while managing the deficit to a degree. Well its all unraveling now. It has been unsustainable for decades.

    The question is what's next?

Since we're on this train that's barreling towards the precipitous hole in the track, and nobody is willing to put the brakes on….I guess the next best thing is to shovel on more coal!
