Ways To Make Money While In School

21 July 2010 3 Comments

There are plenty of jobs to be had in college towns, it just takes a little bit of hunting to find one that’s lucrative enough that it’s worth your while. Food delivery is one of the best ways to make extra income as a college kid, as the food industry is always booming no matter the state of the economy. The reason we decided to focus on food delivery is because not only are there plenty of jobs in all college towns for food delivery, but the amount of money you can make per hour is much higher than that of other part time jobs in places like retail outlets and on campus facilities. Let’s take a look at the ins and outs of food delivery and how you can start earning some extra dollars delivering to hungry college kids.

Where to Apply

The number of food delivery services in a college town are probably innumerable. Everything from pizza to Chinese food is available for delivery and it’s your job to pick the most lucrative food chain to work for. While you may have a preference of a favorite food place like Dominos or Pizza Hut that you’d like to work for, there are a few things you want to consider before you make your decision.

Type of Food

Consider the types of food that are available for delivery in your town. It is probably a no brainer to figure out that pizza is the most popular food in any given college town. But if you know of a niche market in your area that you can capitalize on, go for that instead. If you’re unsure of which type of food business to pick, pizza is always going to be a favorite among starving college students.

Price

You may think that the more expensive the food, the more you’re going to get in tip. Remember that you’re going to be making just above minimum wage as a driver as a flat rate pay, so it’s a good idea to also think about making tips. Try and figure out what types of deals and specials are ordered the most so you can see how they rank. What you’re looking for is a popular price point that’s just below a solid dollar mark. What do we mean? Well, if you work for a place like Dominos where the most popular order is 2 medium pizzas, it’s probably going to ring up on the register at $12 or so. Most people will round this up to $15 to include the tip. If you find a place that sells their most popular delivery item for $16, you’re bound to be making $4 tips at night. It may not be much extra in the long run, but every extra penny and dollar counts when you’re strapped for cash yourself.

Location

When considering a restaurant to work for, consider its location. Not only do you want a place that’s close to your house so that it’s an easy commute to work every day, you want a location that’s near a lot of customers and near other stores of the same chain. If you work for a Pizza Hut in the middle of downtown, you’re more than likely going to have a big customer base that lives near the center of the city. That means that you’re going to get plenty of deliveries in a night. And if you’re in the city, chances are there are other Pizza Hut chains right on the outskirts of the city to cater to the rural and suburban areas. Delivering in the inner city or the central hub of your town can help you earn more income as your customers are closer by. Working on the outskirts of a town means there will be plenty of driving back and forth to the far neighborhoods just to get a $3 or $4 tip. Stick to the innards of a campus or city to maximize your profit potential.
