Economic Data Down, Stocks Up, What Gives?

The economic data continues to be bleak these days with housing numbers continuing to worsen showing more and more that housing is far from a bottom.  Additionally, Bernanke flinched for the first time yesterday in his testimony mentioning that the economic future  is unusually uncertain despite expressing confidence in the recovery for most of the past year.  Despite these developments, stocks are up big today!  The Dow is up over 200 points.  Why?
Well, earnings have been great.  Corporations are continuing to produce impressive profits and are earning cash.  The problem …

Launching An Income Stream With A Partner

As I’ve talked about at length here on this blog, launching an online income stream, especially when it is content driven, is a very challenging process.  Almost always, the entrepreneur hits a wall and usually quits.  Having a partner can make this process much easier to get off the ground.
Currently, I’m involved in a partnership with two other individuals (group of 3) in launching a new website.  More details to come on this new venture.  But for now, I’d like to comment further on the pros and cons of pursuing …

What’s Making Philip Morris Int’l (PM) Move Up & Down?

If you follow Philip Morris Int’l (PM) like I do, you’ll notice that the stock is now back about $50 per share after being in the low $40′s fairly recently.  The stock has dipped down into the mid $40 range several times and has frequently bounced back up to $50 (and higher).  So is this just normal market activity or is something serving as the catalyst for these movements?
The catalyst is of course the Euro.  As the Euro has been in the news much this year with the European sovereign …

UK Prime Minister Cameron flew commercial from England to D.C. last night in an effort to lead the way in cost cutting.  The move is estimated to have saved several hundred thousand dollars compared to the typical action of chartering a jet to make the cross Atlantic flight.  Bravo Cameron.  Maybe Obama and our leaders will pay attention.  Oh wait, I sense another 30 minute campaign speech to deliver in Elkhart Indiana or something that costs a few million to execute.

World War 2 Did Not Lead America Out Of Depression

Fascinating insight from Peter Schiff on the one of many economic fallacies that he seeks to shed light on.  Up today is the idea that war is good for an economy – he touches on the idea that is so commonly accepted today which is that World War 2 fixed America and brought us out of Depression.  Let’s see what Schiff has to say:
There is overwhelming agreement among economists that the Second World War was responsible for decisively ending the Great Depression. When asked why the wars in …

There are plenty of jobs to be had in college towns, it just takes a little bit of hunting to find one that’s lucrative enough that it’s worth your while.

Politics, Quick Hits »

If you scan the headlines, you’d think that the Republicans hate the jobless and want to block extending the jobless benefits.  Even if you read the articles, an important point is often left until the end (here’s an example).  This point is that the Republicans DO support the extension of the benefits.  The reason they are blocking it is because the Democrats refuse to make cuts elsewhere in order to pay for it.  If the cuts are made, the Republicans would vote for it.  Essentially, they want to extend the …

Time To Single Someone Out

Ok, a little while back I did a post on how the homebuyer tax credit was extended.  I mentioned that the Republicans and Democrats BOTH supported the extension. I then mentioned Jim Demint was basically the only one who was against it.  You can see the article here.
Well, today I got a great comment from a person who is clearly a Democrat, who decided to go on a anti-tax cut rant and didn’t even address the homebuyer tax credit issue.  She then went on to tell me that she hoped …
