Employee Training: An Investment that Returns More than Money

In short, every day is a good opportunity to learn something new. So it stands to reason that life gets boring really fast if the chances for learning new things grinds to a halt.

This is exactly what a majority of employees feel after a few years in a company that offers zero training, coaching or any type of useful learning activity whatsoever. They feel neglected and unimportant in the grand scheme of things, which leads to demotivation and general unhappiness.

Put yourself in their shoes: would you stick with a company that doesn’t care about you or your future? With that in mind, let’s take a look at why employee training is a worthwhile investment and why all businesses should do it.

Employees feel better when companies take a genuine interest in their future. That’s why companies such as Google and Toyota have such loyal employees – their training never stops and they are given many opportunities to grow. Boredom and stagnation are never given the chance to take hold.

Employees who receive valuable training facilitated by the company grow to become lifelong and loyal “partners” in the continuous growth of the business. They will invest the best years of their lives to the company that invested heavily in their growth and trusted them to use all that they have learned to help the company reach new heights.

Training Helps Underachievers

Untrained employees are unhappy employees because they know they’re not good enough when compared to their peers. These employees are more likely to underachieve because they don’t know there’s a better way of doing things. When an employee is unhappy and unsatisfied with the job, he won’t care about the end result. Products or services will reflect this, and customers will know. Everybody loses.

Regular coaching and training helps these unhappy, underachieving employees realize that they can be 10 times better than they are. They will be able to dig deep and pull out a different persona, one that is compassionate about her job and will do everything to satisfy the needs of the customer.

Training Corrects the Mistake Prone

Employees who lack training are more prone to mistakes, which cost time, money and resources to fix. Work has to be repeated, which then causes backlogs and bottlenecks in production or distribution. The worse scenario is when a substandard product gets shipped to the customer and it literally comes apart when used. Lost customers and lawsuits are bound to follow.

A trained employee knows when something is off, and will take necessary steps to correct the situation. He won’t need to ask a supervisor about it and will act on it autonomously, saving time and manpower.

There are many ways to facilitate training your employees. You can either do this in-house, which is basically getting your best people to train new employees or those who need coaching. Another way is to employ a training consultant, who will make training modules based on your needs.

Alternatively, you can always seek outside training courses for your staff. Helping others improve their skills and grow as individuals are some of the things overlooked in training circles. You’re helping people gain new skills that they can take with them forever. These are skills that no one can take away and can help them achieve a better future. That is a big deal, and you should be happy you’re doing it!

Training is equal parts a time investment and a money investment. It takes time to train people and money to make it happen, but the results more than make up for the cost. Invest in your people. The karma returns alone are worth it.
