Time To Make A Change! How To Switch Careers Without Starting From Scratch

canstockphoto9945017Sometimes you find yourself in a career that just doesn’t seem to fit with who you are. Perhaps it initially seemed perfect but over time you’ve come to realize that it’s just not the job for you. This can be extremely discouraging as it feels like you’re trapped between sticking it out and starting from scratch. Sometimes that can be the case. If you want a complete and total career change, you might have to start afresh completely. But there are also many options that allow you to shift into different, but not entirely unconnected, roles. That way you can continue to use your existing skill set while working in a job that leaves you feeling happier and more fulfilled.

Sometimes a job can leave you feeling stretched thin. Not just because of the workload but because you’re called upon to do so many things that fall outside of your particular set of skills. In this case, rather than packing it in entirely, why not consider specializing? Becoming a specialist allows you to focus your energy on that one area that you’re passionate about. It also lets you apply your skills to something that actually benefits from them. For example, if you’re working as a nurse but want to specialize, there are many mental health nurse job vacancies available. Or perhaps you want to upgrade from rn to msn. That way you can dedicate your time to something specific and more satisfying.

Make connections

It might not always feel like it, but businesses are run by people. And the great thing about people is that you can speak to and connect with them. If you’re working within any industry, there’s a pretty decent chance that you’ll have the opportunity to network. You’ll often get the opportunity to discuss things with other people within the same industry. By making connections with people, you open yourself up to the possibility of creating new opportunities. If you’re working within the business sector and you’re looking to make a change, the best thing you can do is talk to people. An employer is far more likely to take a chance on you if they know who you are. If you’ve been able to show them your passion, drive, and intelligence, then you already have an advantage over just sending an application.

Learn to frame your experience

Sometimes you’ll find a job that you think you’d be perfect for. That perfect job that ticks all your boxes and that you think you could do well. The only catch it, you’re not sure if you have the right experience. There’s a very simple trick to making yourself desirable for a position like that without having to retrain or, worse, lie. It’s all about framing. If you’ve been working for a while, you probably have lots of experience and skills that are surprisingly easy to transfer. Think about skills that you’ve gained in time management, communication and team building. As well as experience you have understanding software and online services. All these things can be framed to make you as desirable as possible for that role of your dreams.
