Space Travel: How You Can Reach For the Stars

6 March 2017 No Comment

“We choose to go to the moon… and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard… That goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.” –  John F. Kennedy

Are you fascinated by the idea of traveling to the moon and back, or would you like to go to Mars one day? Would you just like to travel up into the sky in order to touch outer space? When you look up in the sky at night, you are surrounded by black, glittering space; consequently, I believe, it makes sense to want to reach out and touch the sky.

Humankind has been fascinated with the sun, moon, and stars (ergo outer space) since the beginning of time. For a long time,  people considered the sky to be a part of the Earth where a sphere existed around the earth where twelve Wanderers (the planets) wandered across the heavens. Even though modern science has disproved many of the earliest theories about our solar system, it has not changed our fascination with the sun, moon, stars, as well as the planets.

For many adventurous souls, Mars, or the Red Planet, has come to symbolize more than space exploration. It has come to mean a hope and future for humanity. As a point of interest, people have accepted that the Red Planet has a unique role to play in our collective awareness. It also explains why we are so preoccupied with traveling to Mars and colonising it.

Funding your space travels

It is easy to assume that affording to travel out of the earth’s atmosphere is going to be an expensive, once-in-a-lifetime experience, unless you are uber-wealthy, of course. If you are not a multi-millionaire, you are going to have to save up both time and money to partake in such an excellent adventure. For the purpose of this discourse, let us assume that you have to fund your space travels by saving up lots of money.

Can you save more than just a set sum from your monthly wages?

In my opinion, you can increase your savings by investing in the global financial markets. There are opportunities to invest in currencies, indices, securities, and commodities. Your investment strategy will determine your exposure to risk.

Financial risk and investment strategies

According to Investopedia, “risk involves the chance an investment’s actual return will differ from the expected return… [and] includes the possibility of losing some or all of the original investment.”

An investment strategy, “or plan of attack, an investor uses when deciding how to allocate capital among several options including stocks, bonds, cash equivalents, commodities, and real estate. The strategy should take into account the investor’s tolerance for risk as well as future needs for capital.”

There is also no doubt that the turbulent geopolitical and socio-economic times that we are currently facing are affecting the global financial markets. Broadly stated, they are up one day and down the next day. The market instability makes for challenging investing; thus, my recommendation is to consider a short-term trading strategy such as day-trading. In other words, you open and close your trading position within a single day. This approach will help mitigate the risk of the markets closing up at the end of a trading day, and then opening down on the subsequent trading day. Weekends can be particularly stressful as the financial markets are closed for two days in a row.

Unless you employ a very long-term investment strategy, where you plan on sitting out the small moves in the markets, it’s best to close your trading position soon after you have opened a particular trading position. In this way, you will be able to keep abreast of the market volatility; thereby reducing your exposure to risk and to losing your entire investment.

Final words

There is no doubt that you can increase your saving by investing in one of the global financial markets. You will need to do your homework and keep your wits about you amongst the challenging changing conditions. In conclusion, enjoy your trip into outer space!
