Get More Out Of Your IT Team

29 November 2017 No Comment

For any modern business, the IT department is a hugely important part of daily proceedings. Without them, much of what holds up the infrastructure of your company would likely collapse, and the security of the business would likewise be quickly breached. As such, it is hugely valuable if you pay close attention to what the IT team need, so that you can help them to make the most of what they’re doing. As it happens, there is much that you could be doing in order to get more out of your IT team, so let’s take a look at some of those things now.

Hiring The Right People

Before you even look into making sure the IT department have everything you need, it is a good idea to look at who they really are. It is a sad truth that those in the IT department are often hired hastily, sometimes as a response to something going wrong, and this can mean that you don’t end up with the best possible team working for you. If you want your IT department to do the best possible work, you need the best people. As such, one of the first things is to make sure you have the right team on board in the first place.

How do you do this? One good method is to hold a regular training session. During these sessions, you can effectively put your employees to the test and see how they are coming along, where they might need improving and so on. You can also spot the people who are routinely failing to live up to your expectations. Note that the goal here is not necessarily to fire people as quickly as possible, but rather to help along those who might need the help. If there is anyone consistently failing to take this help and make it into something useful, then disciplinary action is of course always a possible route to take. Regardless, the main goal should be to hire the right people in the first place.

During the hiring process therefore, look for experience and enthusiasm above all else. As long as your people have that, you can be sure that the IT team will be much stronger for it, and it will be a solid foundation for you to build on. Of course, there is much besides that you might want to consider doing as well, so let’s look more deeply into this issue.

Removing Irrelevant Processes

For those who work in IT, time is an essential ingredient to getting things done right. This might be true elsewhere as well, but it is especially relevant in the world of technology, and it is one of the first things you should look into if you are hoping to get more out of your IT team. They need to be able to manage their time effectively if they are to look after the computer systems as best as they can. So what can you do to ensure that they are able to manage their time well?

For a start, you might want to consider removing any processes which might be irrelevant, outdated or antiquated. Chances are, they will themselves have a pretty good idea of which processes these are. A good example is if you have a fax server in your building. In all likelihood, you no longer actually need this to function, and you could achieve much of the same with much less maintenance by just using cloud systems instead. You can apply this same understanding to many other processes within your business, and you might find that it makes the IT department’s job much easier in a short amount of time. This will mean that they can devote their time to doing what is really important for your business – and that will help hugely in keeping the business running smoothly.

Using Updated Systems

Many businesses run into the danger of rarely, if ever, upgrading their computer systems. Not only does this cause problems for your staff on upper floors, but it makes life much more difficult for the IT team as well. The truth is that it is often better to spend money upgrading the computers in the IT department than to upgrade those elsewhere in the company. This is because it is effectively a way of cutting to the source. As long as the systems of those fixing the other systems are in the best working order, it will positively affect all the others. This should really be considered one of the absolute essentials of getting more out of your IT team: keep their systems updated, and make their life a lot easier. It is irregularly amazing what a difference this can really make.

Appointing A Leader

Any team works much better if there is a solid leader to it, and that is as true of the IT department as it is of anyone else. If you find that your IT team could be doing better work or making better use of their time, then you might want to think about finding someone to be their team leader. The usual candidates for this kind of role are those who have the most experience and understanding of what is involved, so look first to those who have been in the IT team the longest. You should also consider whether anyone has a specific qualification. Chances are, lots of them will, but this will still help to narrow it down a little.

Having a strong team leader can make a world of difference. It will mean that time is used more effectively, more gets done on a daily basis, and problems are fixed quickly and more in order of actual importance. All of this means that your IT team will be doing their jobs much more efficiently, and you will be able to support them all the more as well.

Once you are getting more out of your IT team, you can be sure that it will positively affect the rest of your business for good.
