How To Create The Right Mentality When Working From Home

21 February 2018 No Comment

As working practices change, more and more people are working from home. It’s a far more flexible way to work for a lot of people and you can make good money doing it. However, there are still some downsides to working from home. When you’re working in a traditional office environment, you’ve got strict working hours and a boss to keep you motivated. If you start slacking off, there’s somebody there to tell you to get back to work. When you’re working from home you don’t have that so it’s easy to fall behind. If you can’t stay motivated, you won’t do well working from home. Here are some great tips to help you stay motivated when you’re working from home.

Set Up An Office

If you’re sitting in the lounge with your laptop trying to work, your mentality is going to be all wrong. You’re in a space that’s usually reserved for relaxing so you’re more likely to procrastinate. Even though you aren’t in an office, you need to act like it. The best way to do that is to create a space in the house that is dedicated for work. Take a spare room and fill it with office furniture and remove all of the distractions. When you’re in that room, you’ll be in work mode and you won’t be as likely to slack off.

Set Work Hours

As well as having a dedicated space to work in, you need to set proper work hours. If you don’t, it’s easy for you to tell yourself that you’ll just watch TV for an hour and then you’ll get on. Before you know it, you’ve put off working all day and you’ll be rushing to get everything done. The beauty of working from home is that you don’t need to work traditional 9 to 5 hours but whenever you want to do your work, you need to make sure that you’re doing the same amount of work each day between set hours. It makes it far easier to plan your work and make sure that you’re using your time well.

Dress Properly

The clothes that you wear have a big impact on your motivation. If you’re dressed in the same clothes that you wear when you relax, you’ll be in that mindset and you won’t work effectively. There’s no need to get up and put a full suit on every day but you should at least wear some relatively smart clothes so you feel ready for work. Comfort is important but if you take it too far, you’ll end up struggling to get into the right mindset for working hard.

People often think that the benefit of a 9 to 5 job in an office is that you have somebody there to force you to work hard but that’s not it. It’s all about the mentality that you have. You know that you’re there to work so you’ll get on with it. The key to working effectively from home is to recreate that mentality.
