Escape the Rat Race & Make Money Outside of the Office

27 February 2018 No Comment

Some people find all of their personal fulfillment in work, but that isn’t you. No, you find your joy outside of the office, traveling, experiencing other cultures and bettering yourself through new learning experiences.

As you begin your career, it’s easy to get stressed out by the prospect of spending decades slaving away in a cubicle. You want to be able to explore the world and enjoy your life before you’re in your 60s. Right?

Here are a few strategies for how you can break free from the rat race and live your best life now:

Choose a Flexible Career

Certain career choices lend themselves to remote work more than others. For instance, a doctor or a teacher doesn’t have nearly as much flexibility in where they work as a marketing professional or graphic designer does.

When you are in your 20s and at the start of your career, you have a great opportunity to choose a career path that suits your long-term goals. Whether you want to travel the world or work from home so you can spend more time with your future family, look for a job that you could do from anywhere to provide you the ultimate flexibility.

Don’t be discouraged if you aren’t able to find a job right away where you can work from home or make your own hours. Instead, think about the big picture. Could you see yourself being able to perform all of the job’s responsibilities out of the office? Is the work clearly measurable? If so, don’t hesitate to take a more traditional 9 to 5 office job now, so that you can gain the experience and build trust among management to do the job remotely after a few years.

Start Your Own Business

If you work for an employer that won’t let you work remotely, perhaps now is the time to break out on your own. You could start your own business doing the same work as a freelancer, serving your employer or other business connections you have made through your time in the profession.

Another option is to start your own business through an established company, like Amway. A global leader in health and beauty, Amway has a thorough framework in place to provide support and guidance to budding entrepreneurs that can help ease the growing pains that can occur in the transition from employee to self-employed.

While being self-employment comes with ample new responsibilities like managing your bookkeeping, business development and marketing efforts, the freedom of being able to make your own hours and work from anywhere cannot be beat. While it can be more stressful than the stability of working for someone else, you’ll have the opportunity to experience unmatched growth, both personally and professionally.

Automate Your Income

Income automation has the potential to revolutionize the way that you spend your time and enjoy your life. Business self-help guru Tim Ferriss wrote one of the bibles on this topic, “The 4-Hour Workweek.” In it, Ferriss offers numerous tried and true tips for how to outsource effectively and diversify your income streams so that you can minimize the amount of work your have to do to earn a living so that you can more fully enjoy your life.

Real estate investment also offers a great opportunity for income automation. You could purchase rental properties in desirable areas that need a little TLC and then fix them up and rent them out for a monthly profit.

Focus on the Big Picture

Whether you find a flexible career, start your own business or automate your income altogether, you’ll likely have to put in some additional time working on the front end before you can really step back and fully embrace your life outside of the daily 9 to 5 rat race. But if you can stay focused on your long-term goals, it will be well worth spending time doing this work now and soon you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
