Having great coverage makes sense if you are someone who regularly goes to the doctor and needs help covering your medical bills. What about if you are a healthy young person who does not need to see a physician very often? Why do you still need to pay for health insurance? The first reason is that now it is mandated, so you will be paying whether or not you have coverage. The other reason is preparing for the unexpected.

The Mandate

With the new Affordable Care Act in place, all US citizens need to have health insurance in California and other states. If you do not have a health insurance plan in place, then you will face a tax penalty. Thus, either way, you are paying in some form for health insurance. The tax penalty means that you will pay a percentage of your income or a set dollar amount, whichever is higher. The percentage and set dollar amount changes from year to year. For 2014, the tax will be 1% of your adjusted gross income or $95 for an individual.

Preparing for the Unexpected

The other reason why you need health insurance is to prepare for the unexpected. Even the healthiest young person can be involved in a medical emergency, including something as unexpected as a motor vehicle crash. Without insurance, you are still responsible for costs including transport by ambulance, hospitalization, medication, and any procedures such as x-rays, surgeries, and so forth. You never know when such a medical emergency will arise—sometimes it is better to be prepared.

There are many different reasons why you need good health insurance in California. Some of the most obvious include the government mandate and being prepared for unexpected medical emergencies. To get started on finding an affordable insurance plan, call a knowledgeable insurance agent today.
