If you want to start your own business but have no idea where to start – don’t worry – everyone tends to begin this way unless they’ve grown up in business school. A lot of people have a wake-up call and then realise what they want to do in life, so whether you’re realising this early or late – don’t let that put you off. You can do whatever you want to do.

Why do something mundane that you don’t enjoy, when you can create something catered to exactly what you love? And better yet, make an income from it too.

So here’s what you need to know.

Don’t be afraid to admit this isn’t for you.

If you’re currently working in a job that you genuinely don’t enjoy, whether that be down to the task at hand, the people you work with, the environment you work in, or the meaning of the business – then don’t be afraid to follow your heart. If you find yourself waking up in the morning and dreading going into the office, then you shouldn’t be doing it. Life is too short. So if you want change – don’t wait around for it to happen, as it may never will. You need to be the one that makes that change happen.

Figure out what direction you want to go in.

The sooner you know what industry you’re looking to get into, the sooner you can build your way up to success. You want to ask yourself what is the best franchise to own, along with when the best time is to own it. Remember that you can have as long as you want to explore areas, so don’t rush your decision if you still aren’t sure it is the right direction for you. You should also take your own personality and style into consideration, as that will alter your business.

Create a business plan to follow.

This can be as formal or informal as you wish. You don’t need to make a professional document – merely a piece of paper to scribble notes on is enough as long as you can understand it. The more detail you give about the way you plan on creating and maintaining your business, the more chance you have of following it and reaching your goals. You can refer back to your plan at any time when you find yourself struggling, and it should put you back on the right path.

Know who your target audience is.

Before you start spending money on the things that you need to create your business, you need to figure out who your target audience is. It’s no good making investments when you don’t know who’s going to be buying your products or services. So put in as much work as you can to gather all information on who you are catering your business towards. What age group are they in? Is it gender based? What kind of lifestyles do they live? And are they based locally or worldwide?
